Got some new things. I got a new necklace from Etsy.com (http://hoots4u.etsy.com). Love it. Rob got his energy stuff. And…..
I got my surly frameset!! But it’s sad because my parts aren’t here yet so she’s not rideable. Couple more weeks…just a couple more weeks1
I follow a few cycling blogs but usualy forget to check up on them regularly. One inparticular I am fond of as the author and her family choose to rely solely on their bikes for transportaion. They live in Oregon and though i’m a month behind in reading her posts (which sad to me are beginning to become few and far between). She biked through her pregnancy and transports her son by a cargo bike. Her latest post from January talks about a bill that Representative Greenlick is trying to pass that keeps children under 6yrs old away from bicycle trailors and seats!! You can find links in regards to this on her blog… http://civilizedconveyance.blogspot.com/2011/01/hb-2228.html A short followup to the interview with Greenlick linked on her site is here http://bikeportland.org/2011/01/13/greenlick-child-biking-bill-reaction-roundup-45910 My internet is running to slow to do much research on this topic but when I find out more info I will update here. I have never lived in or been to Oregon but it certainly draws my interest.
I find it sad that this is what our society is coming down to. This bill is in its infancy and may never amount to much but the fact that someone would consider this only means that other’s are thinking the same thing. Apparently Rep. Greenlick never rode a bike as a child. If he had then he would realize how foolish his request is.
Did I forget to mention that we’ve gone vegetarian? Don’t think I did. Yes yes. We don’t eat meat anymore. It’s only been 3 weeks but it has not been hard. I still give myself another month or 2 before I start having my burger cravings again. But for when that does happen they make wonderful ‘veggie protien’ burgers to fill that gap. As for the hubs he only ate meat when I had put it infront of him…which was nearly every dinner that I made.
It’s sad how much Americans (and some other countries) use meat as their food staple. Meat should be a nice treat but instead we eat it as our main courses..often for each meal of the day. Breakfast..bacon or sausages. Lunch…perhaps left overs from the night before (steak, chicken, fish) or just a burger from the burger joint or a meat sandwich. Dinner…meat and potatoes. This is to much cholestoral and protien that over does our system and depleats our bones of calcium.
Plants offer just as much calcium as meats do so don’t go assuming that vegetarians are imbalanced without meat. Nature offers many alternatives..we just fail to realize it. but to keep from ranting which is easy for me to do you can read more of it from me on my other blog Http://summers-angel-veg.blogspot.com I post recipes that we’ve tried.
There is a new women’s team for this year! I’ve been occasionaly hunting for women’s teams to follow and now i’ve got a new one to keep an eye on along with team Webcor and Tibco.
One more girl came forward about the girl cycling group i’m trying to form. This won’t be a team or anything but rather what i’m aiming for is just a group of girls to share cycling with. To do rides with. Someone to have something in common with. This other girl’s husband is actually friends with mine so thats cool. We’ve never met though. Last I met her husband was a year ago at a Duathlon.
It really looks like the weather is reaching spring. I did 24 miles yesterday. My lungs need some working on lol. My speed yesterday was promising..more like what it was when I quit for the winter. But that may have just been one good day. My next day off isn’t until friday but it’s suppose to be rainy. However temps seem to be hovering in the mid 40’s with the occasional dip intot he 30’s. But this is certainly promising that spring is arriving!
It seems most of my blogs these days are just me saying i’m going to do something and then I don’t do it. Winter does this to me. I make goals but let the weather and my winter moods get the best of me. I fear I suffer slightly from SAD (season affective disorder). No sun (or warmth) = unmotivated.
I’m trying my hardest to get past it. Temps dropped agian since my last ride. But have begun to rise up again. Tomorow it will peak in the mid 40’s (cross fingers) so I am aiming to do the Oberkail loop. I don’ know what to expect in my performance since it seems that took a nose dive with my off-season. I will just take my time and try not to push myself to hard up the hills.
There are 2 races coming up in April already. The tour de flanders (belgium) and the USAFE race at Aviano base in Italy. Not sure if we’ll make it to either but the hubs is debating doing Flanders while we’re both debating doing Aviano. I am still unsure about the race myself since I’ll have march to warm up the legs and thats about it then bam..race. The ladies in Italy have it warmer than here right now I believe..giving them the advantage of early spring riding.
Eitherway it appears that spring is just around the corner. I am taking the summer off from school to focus on my riding a bit (and to get some sanity away from education).
I’ve posted an ad in a local outlet in hopes to round up some hidden lady cyclists out here. So far i’ve got one responder! Lets hope there are more. If not..well then at least i’ve discovered one.
In buying news….the Surly frame and the bike parts have been purchased. Now it’s just the waiting game to get everything. I’ve also indulged in a team jersey. Team Webcor purchased off Velor.com I really really really wanted team Tibco’s jersey but my sizes were sold out. I was the last to get the ’10 Webcor jersey however. I feel special there.
I kind of bailed out after Wensdays ride. No gym time and no riding until today. I think my body need the recoup time since its been a while since i’ve been pushing it to the max. Needless to say I sleep very well on the evenings of my riding days.
As I was getting dressed for my ride today I was pumped by the bits of sun that was showing through. Of course that never lasts long enough for me to enjoy the second I walk out the door.
I did 24 miles today. Still 2mph slower than fall but i’m going to accept this as my punishment for not really touching the trainer the months inbetween. I still like to blame the cold air on that as well as it makes my muscles a little stiff and it burns my lungs a little in the beginning. Overall, the ride was pleasant after about mile 11. It took that long for my body to feel warmed up (not as in I was freezing but as in that my muscles woke up). I almost ditched out after that but decided to push a little and see if I could get another lap of base in and second time around it wasn’t to shabby.
Totaly miles so far this month are only 59 1/2.
In rewarding myself for starting early this year I’ve decided to get another jersey kit 😀 Sshh Rob doesn’t know that yet.
Here are the runners up for my selections:
http://www.teamestrogen.com/prodPW_SPA1J60W.html Them gloves are catching my eye as well. Primal wear seems to be my favorite so far in jerseys.
http://www.teamestrogen.com/prodPW_TIK1J60W.html This one matches my handlebar tape LOL not sure if it’s going into my wishlist though. It’s definately a ‘be seen’ kit.
Hmmm guess at the moment the Sparrow kit is all i’m finding. I was going to look into a Team Tibco kit but they are all sold out. Perhaps making way for the 2010 kit seeing as last year they were selling the ’09 kit. If i’d have known they were going on sale I would have gobbled me one up. Oh well.
Not to quote the Nike logo but sometimes thats what needs to be done. You just need to suck it up and do it. And do it I did. I’m back in cycling action as long as the weather permits. Temps have been above freezine (high 30’s low 40’s F) So i’ve been sucking it up and riding.
I’ve only been at it twice but I certainly feel amazing again. Good to have the endorphins back!
This past sunday I did 18 miles. Today I did 17.5 miles. This seems to be my max threshold with the temps being in the upper 30’s. By the last half of my ride my toes are numb, my leg muscles are stiffening up, and my body says ‘Heat!’. Todays ride was windy and rainy as well. Even with double socks and double underlayer. I got many stares from cars passing by. Must thinking me crazy for riding my bike.
I have also been pretty consistant with going to the gym. I was going to go this morning but when I pulled up the place was packed. I turned around and went home. Good thing cuase then I got my bike ride in 🙂
Sad thing however is that my average speed is down 2mph. Rob tells me thats not good but honestly considering I haven’t rode in over 3 months I suppose thats not to horrible. I’ll give myself the beginning of February to begin improving that. For now my focus is just to get out and ride again.
How do you end an nice bike ride? You chow down on ‘The loaded bowl’! I may have metioned this recipe before but if I have not then here it is again…
The Loaded Bowl Recipe here
Its Quinoa, black beans, avocado, and tomatos in super deliciousness. Mmmmm. I’m a fanatic for Clean Eating recipes because they’re healthy, simple and there are very few of their recipes I don’t like. This particular one was a reader’s recipe feature in one of the issues.
thats all for today. Chow!
I’m having a little bit of the winter blues. I’ve slowly begun working out again. Not so much on the bike trainer just yet but I did manage to workout 3x this week (slow re-emergence). There really is a lack of motivation when the weathers always crappy and its cold out. Rob got a video from a friend regarding the bike trainer. It’s supposidly a program that helps you get through the indoor riding insanity that many people go through. It is a guided bike ride (meaning real rodes in the video to make you feel like your riding outside) and a guy instructing you when to push and when to ride easy. Perhaps I will try it out this week sometime.
I’ve managed 2 days at the gym on the treadmill. I have since realized that I no longer get motivated at night for working out. I used to. I used to get super pumped in the evenings to work out but at some point during the move to Germany, evenings just aren’t appealing to me anymore. I now fancy morning workouts. I don’t really know when my workout motivation took a nose dive but it really did. 15lbs later and I can honestly say it took that nose dive. For someone that was always into physical activity it makes me wonder how the motivation can just dissappear like that. I just hope the regular me decides to show its face again because I want workingout to be something I enjoy again..not something I’m doing just to keep myself healthy.
Perhaps I just don’t feel comfortable here in Germany. I am enjoying my stay here and we’ve put in for an extension of 3 more years which we will find out in a few weeks if we got or not. If we didn’t then we are moving again by this time next year. Maybe it’s a lack of friends. I haven’t made close friends here so I often spend most of my time at home knitting or biking. On rare occasion i’ll meet up with some friends i’ve made over the last 2 yrs. However, none of them I feel really connected to especialy since they are all really close with each other prior to me appearing in the group. I wish more chicks were into cycling.
Something will happen at some point in time. Perhaps Germany just isn’t for me. Nothing I can do about that other than to enjoy the time I have here since this is a rare oppurtunity that I will probably never get again.
School starts up again next week for me. I’ll be taking 2 classes this term. I should be able to manage working, work, and school but this will mean long days ahead of me. I also do not know where our trip home stands. It went from a 3 week visit to a 4 week visit and now I fear we won’t find a sitter for our dog or that my job will give me that much time off. I just hope something happens theres soon as well. Oh winter blues…your making me slightly miserable.
